María Antonia Sánchez has been a community health worker (CHW) in the mid-Columbia area of the Northwest since 1988. After her arrival in the United States, she helped community residents to access health and social services. She previously was a CHW at Nuestra Comunidad Sana of The Next Door, Inc. In this position, she served as a breast cancer screening promotion CHW, education trainer, family garden promoter, and co-facilitator of a program for domestic violence perpetrators.

Ms. Sánchez is a highly-respected member of the Northwestern regional Latino community. She was the 2016 recipient of the Outstanding CHW of the Year award by the American Public Health Association. She also was the first CHW who ever received the prestigious Health Care Professional Hearts of Gold Award by Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital in Oregon.
